It amazes me that after years of planning and careful consideration on our new sheriff’s office and jail complex that we are still not completed. Not only are we not completed, the old jail and NEW annex jail are completely overcrowded. How is it that there is so much overcrowding in the Cabarrus County Jail’s?
A few days ago a lady sent me a facebook message in reference to her son. She explained how he had been jailed (for the first time) and was overwhelmed by the conditions that he found himself in. He was given a mat and told to sleep on the floor. The cell was so overcrowded that he literally had to step over people to make his way to the toilet and shower. He asked if he could get a bed and was told that the jail was over populated. After telling his mother she attempted to contact Sheriff Riley to register her concern. As of the time of the writing, Sheriff Riley never contacted her back. She was not disputing the reason why her son was in jail. No doubt many will say he shouldn’t have been there to begin with. But as a tax payer, a mother, a citizen, she asks...”Why are the conditions in the Cabarrus County Jail’s so bad?”
After all this money spent, why is there overcrowding? Why after all this planning is the new jail still ill equipped in housing inmates? Isn’t this the reason the FBI strongly suggested that the county build new state of the art jails to begin with? And why isn’t the main complex completed? Why is there a delay on the inspection? Why does the sheriff not return phone calls to caring mothers?
Actually, I have a great explanation for all these questions, which I will be happy to reveal very soon. In the meanwhile, anyone reading this post that has concerns they would like addressed, feel free to do as the mother of the jailed son. Send a facebook message to Sharon Wentworth. After verification that the complaint is real, we may just ask for the answers.

it is very obvious that you are new to cabarrus county. have you not been following the jail overcrowding story since 1999 when it was first mentioned to the COUNTY COMMISSIONERS? it is only the sheriffs job to occupy the building and make recommendations to the commissioners to build a new bldg, not control who get put in jail. the new jail is nearly complete, so hold your panties. secondly, the FBI has not a damn thing to do with the jail, recommending or regulating. why is the new bldg not completed you ask? why dont you point to the "residents against a new jail" crapfest from 2 yrs ago, the ones who sued the county to prevent the jail from being built and put it's construction off that long as well. why don't you have every single parent of an inmate call and complain and see where that gets you? nowhere... the sheriff asked the commissioners for more staff to work in the new bldg that is almost done however that has been postponed until AT LEAST february of next year. so good luck with that...
ReplyDeleteThe Sheriff is responsible for running the jail. He is, however, at the mercy of the county commissioners when it comes to staffing, construction costs, etc.... I am certain the Sheriff would love to have staff already in place to open the jail when it is complete, but he can't do anything unless the county commissioners approve it.
ReplyDeleteAs far as that mother's complaint, she needs to worry about keeping her son out of jail. Don't worry about the conditions, worry about his criminal behavior!
ReplyDeleteThe Sheriff is most certainly responsible for that Jail. He has known for quite sometime that him, along with the county commissioner really botched this big time. It will be interesting who takes the blame. Jay White, or Sheriff Riley.....I would like to see them bump heads for once. I know Jay White is sick of Riley antics. Everyone's job would be much simpler with a new Sheriff. I feel like a lot of individuals that works for or with Riley are aware of this, but will never double cross Riley and state anything publicly. Its sad that he works off fear and intimidation.

By condoning Sheriff Riley's activities you are condoning things like having affairs, and handling situation with violence. I feel sorry for his wife.
The fact is Riley has known how many deputies to hire for the new jail for 4 years now. He only presented this to the commissioners this year. Poor planning. The Commissioners are waiting for him to make his move. Yeah yeah, the sheriff only outfits the people to run the jail. BS. He is a deep conspirator in this whole operation. Who is delaying the inspectors...Riley, Day or White? All in secret dilebrations together. The citizens should take notice, we on the inside know.

ReplyDeleteCorrect, and if you would attend the commissioner meetings, you would have seen long ago was the estimate of how many deputies it would take to run it, which was 3+ yrs ago, long before construction began. they put it off as long as they could then the economy tanked. can't really justify raising taxes to hire deputies 3 yrs ago for a bldg that isn't ready yet, cuz then you all would bitch about that instead... find a platform and stick with it.
It is disturbing to me to read a statement that is so disconcerting as to wish that Chief Deputy Paul Hunt would have a “HEART ATTACK” while climbing stairs. What kind a person does such a thing? The first thing the statement says about you is that you are a COWARD!! Anyone that makes such a statement and is not willing to sign their name is nothing but a coward. The second thing your statement tells us about you is that you are not a Christian!! A Christian would not wish something as terrible as a heart attack on another person. The third thing your statement says about you is that you must be a disgruntled employee that works with the Chief Deputy since you seemed to have formed such a detailed description of him—how else would you know that he uses the stairs. So I say to you Mr. Cowardly-non-Christian-disgruntled slug-- climb out from under your rock and show yourself—I think you will find that the Citizens of Cabarrus County don’t need or want people of your caliber living in their community!! As sheriff you are that lead law enforcement officer in the county. The deputies represent you on and off duty. How many times have we heard that, more than I can count? I heard you say that everything in this department you control and that it doesn’t happen unless you approve it. Now the jail cost has increased astronomically, just think if you would have completed things on time and at what you budgeted the county could have employed lots teachers and other hard working citizens. You claim that the commissioners are responsible or your buddy Jay white. You can’t it have it both ways.
ReplyDeleteWhy are the inmates on the floor? Why haven’t you transported them to other facilities? Why don’t you try working up here? It’s not fair to the inmates or your deputies/correction officers. Why don’t you care about anyone besides your self? Your administration has warned you, but they are not allowed to act unless you approve from you thrown or your satellite offices (the location of your numerous vacations).
I wish you were in our shoes. You know how dangerous it can be to the officers and the inmates themselves. Please for once think of some one besides yourself. Think of the potential law suits from the injuries from fights or workers comp.
What about morale? You leave us in these conditions. You promote from outside or your family. You’re forcing us to place our loyalties elsewhere. Chief Deputy Hunt is causing as many problems as you are. Don’t make these promises just because it is election time.

ReplyDeleteWe’re doing the best we can under the circumstances at the jail. We’re sending prisoners to other jails across NC at high costs to the county tax payers and have been doing so for so time. Last week, we had over 60 prisoners in other jails at costing over $2500 a day. The jail is almost complete, but the sheriff did not ask for staffing until last January in the middle of lying off county jobs. Go watch the county commissioner meetings. And what we have been told, this is it for another year. The earliest the jail will open is next year. I wish you only knew the whole story. The sheriff forgot to put any money in the budget to cover housing these prisoners at other jails so you are looking at several $1,000 a day not I the budget. One screwed up mess and no real hope to change this mess.

Just a couple clarification points about Bradson's arrest. He was not actually arrested, but served a criminal summons for Simple Assault 87CR 006141, on July 11, 1987. Also, guess who else in his family has a felony arrest record? Any guess? Any guess? The first correct guess verified by time stamp from the blog wins your very own KEEP RILEY SHERIFF T-SHIRT........ CR#s to follow to verify the correct response. This is probably the first accurate statement on this blog in some time. That's an idea now. What about posting a daily question about Bradson, his life, past misdeeds, incompetencies, etc., and see who can answer it?
